GuelphToday received the following letter from reader Donna Jennison who wants the government to take a bold stand when it comes to climate change:

The planet is in crisis. Vast, rich, complex, life-giving ecosystems like our oceans, coral reefs and rain-forests are facing destruction of biblical proportion. Raging inferno wildfires, 100 year floods, acidification, bleaching, decade long droughts.

Melting arctic ice and permafrost are poised to cause the release of terrifying methane plumes that will alter the very air we breath. Other horrifying feedback loops threaten to push us into rapid climate breakdown.

David Attenbourough, speaking at the 2018 UN climate change summit states, “If we don’t take action the collapse of our civilizations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon.” Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the Untied Nations warned delegates, “In short, we need a complete transformation of our global energy economy, as well as how we manage land and forest resources.”

Tackling the Climate and Ecological Emergency, its systemic causes and its unjust impacts should be the overriding priority of every politician, and to which all available resources should be immediately directed.

Our Federal and Provincial governments continue to subsidize and otherwise support the oil and gas industry and the status quo. They have failed to protect our future and the future of all life on earth.

I call on all levels of government, especially our federal government as they prepare the throne speech for Dec. 5, to tell the truth about climate change and take the bold, aggressive action that is required to ensure the livability of this planet now and for future generations. The time for bold action is now. It's time for a Green New Deal.

Please share your support for a Green New Deal. For Life. For the planet. For our children's future and for all Life on Earth.
