GuelphToday received the following letter regarding Guelph's housing crisis.

This letter is also in regards to the housing crisis.

Will start by saying this idea was not mine but when I heard it my feeling was “what a great idea. Take a portion of the former reformatory grounds (currently sitting idle) and build supportive housing.

Depending on how many units are built, this would solve some of the homeless housing crisis. In exchange for a roof over someone’s head they would have to commit to doing a number of hours re: keeping up their neighbourhood (ie: painting a fence, tilling the soil for a community garden, working in a community garden).

The hours committed would be fixed and the person would be paid for their commitment (sliding wage). This would give the person a sense of self-worth.

A contract would be signed and the person would be aware of the expectation.
