Ice storm cometh (8 photos)

Branches, some of them big and dangerous, can crashing down throughout Guelph and area on Friday. Laden with heavy ice from a day and night of freezing rain, the branches sagged precariously along streets and sidewalks, some giving way under the weight. Power-lines came down with them.

The entire city and out into the country was coated in a crusty layer of ice. Power-lines snapped under the weight throughout southern Ontario, including in a number of locales in Wellington County, cutting power to hundreds of Hydro One customers in the region.

There were small pockets of outages in the city of Guelph, with Guelph Hydro crews in the locales working to restore power. As of about 2 p.m. Friday, about 20 customers were without power in a west side neighbourhood off College Ave W. near the Hanlon Expressway. Restoration was expected by 10 p.m.

The Orangeville area was the site of a much larger, more general outage. Zones between Elora and Drayton, and between Fergus and Arthur were also without power.

A strip running through Rockwood also experienced an outage that affected about 250 Hydro One customers.

In all cases crews were onsite as of early afternoon.
