Guelph Hydro reports 1.2 percent drop in electricity use during Earth Hour 2016

Participation in Guelph and Rockwood up over 2015

GUELPH - Hundreds of Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. customers in Guelph and Rockwood turned off their lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. this past Saturday in support of Earth Hour 2016, reducing the electricity load by just over two megawatts, or 1.2 per cent, when compared to a Saturday night with similar temperatures.

“A drop of two megawatts in Guelph and Rockwood is equivalent to removing more than 700 homes from the grid for an hour,” says Matt Weninger, director of Metering and Conservation for Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc.

The 2016 results revealed an increase in participation over 2015.

In 2015, Guelph Hydro recorded a drop in demand of 1.7 megawatts during Earth Hour.

Record participation globally

Earth Hour 2016 saw record participation around the world, with millions of people in 178 countries and territories celebrating the event.

More than 400 of the world’s landmarks, from the Sydney Opera House in Australia to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in England, even the International Space Station, dimmed their lights in celebration of Earth Hour.
