The city will soon be home to eight new electric vehicle charging stations downtown.

Work to install four level two stations in the East Parkade and four more in the West Parkade, both accessible from Macdonell Street, is set to begin Dec. 14 and take a week to complete.

“These charging stations will help transition the community to low and no-emission vehicles,” states a city notice about the project.

It will cost $1.50 per hour to charge an electric vehicle at the new stations.

The project is partially funded by the federal government’s Zero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure Program.

Access to some parking spaces will be temporarily restricted; signs will direct drivers to available spaces. There are no restrictions to pedestrian access anticipated.

Access to businesses will be maintained throughout the installation process.

“Every effort will be made to maintain access to driveways in the construction area during working hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.),” states the notice. “Construction activities and equipment movement may temporarily impact access to private and public property and delays should be expected.”
