NEWS RELEASE
GUELPH POLICE SERVICE
*************************
Recently, the City of Guelph has experienced an increase in fentanyl overdoses including two that resulted in deaths.  On March 4, 2020, the Guelph Police Service Drug Unit made an arrest in relation to a recent overdose.

A 31-year-old Fergus male was arrested for trafficking of a controlled substance. A search warrant was executed at a residence in Fergus and a small quantity of suspected drugs, cash, cell phones, a computer and a knife were seized. The investigation is ongoing. The male will appear in court on April 24.

Police discourage the use of all illegal substances but want to warn the public that a more potent batch of fentanyl may be on the streets.

Drug users should carry naloxone, never use alone or use at the Consumption and Treatment Services Site (CTS) supervised by health professionals at Guelph’s Community Health Centre located at 176 Wyndham Street North, especially when changing their supplier.

If someone is overdosing, call 911 immediately for medical assistance. Also, please remember that the “Good Samaritan Law” prevents a rescuer, who has voluntarily helped a victim in distress as a result of illicit drug use, from being charged criminally for simple possession of controlled substances even if they too were using illicit drugs.

Anyone with any information in relation to drug trafficking is asked to contact the Guelph Police Service Drug Unit tip line at (519) 824-1212 ext. 7497, leave an anonymous tip at CRIME STOPPERS 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
