Kee brothers to stand trial on reduced charges in death of Nick Tanti

Aidan Kee will be tried for second degree murder, while his brother Angus will stand trial for unlawful act manslaughter and accessory after the fact manslaughter

Guelph brothers Aidan and Angus Kee will each stand trial on different charges in relation to the 2020 death of Nick Tanti.

The ruling came at the end of a preliminary inquiry that concluded on Thursday.

Justice Nicole Redgate ruled there was sufficient evidence for Angus Kee, 23, to stand trial for the charges of unlawful act manslaughter and accessory after the fact manslaughter.

Aidan, 27, will be tried for second degree murder.

A judicial pretrial hearing for both brothers will begin on July 13.

Initially the brothers were each charged with first degree murder in the death of Tanti, who died after being stabbed during an altercation outside of Tony's Billiards in Downtown Guelph Feb. 29, 2020.

When the decision to try both brothers was announced by Redgate, Tanti's mother Sharon was muted but seen on the video mouthing the words 'thank God, thank God.'

Reached after the hearing, Sharon confirmed those were her words and said although she wishes the Kees were both still being tried for first degree murder she is thankful for the work of the Crown and judge for the decision.

A publication ban is in place on evidence presented during the preliminary inquiry, as it may later be presented at trial.

Aidan appeared in Thursday's virtual Zoom hearing by video, while Angus attended by phone.

Angus has been out on bail since May of 2020, while Aidan was released on bail in July.
