Two charged in copper wire theft investigation

On the afternoon of Feb. 27, 2020, police initiated a traffic stop with a large van near the intersection of Speedvale Avenue East and Stevenson Street North in the City of Guelph in regards to an ongoing copper wire theft investigation.

The van was found to contain a large amount of copper wire and the two adult males inside the van were subsequently arrested.

A search incident to arrest revealed that one of the males was also in possession of 11.52 grams of crushed morphine in powder form and 0.24 litres of crushed morphine inside four needles in solvent form.

A 44-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:
    •    Possession of stolen property under $5,000
    •    Possession of a controlled substance

A 32-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:
    •    Possession of stolen property

They will both appear in court on April 17.

The Guelph Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance with any information related to any recent copper wire thefts. The wire recovered in this incident is described as thick heavy gauge copper.
