Guelph Emerging Artist Mentorship Project 2020

By: Guelph Arts Council

Guelph Arts Council is relaunching the Guelph Emerging Artist Mentorship Project (GEAMP) this Fall, a highly successful program that has run for six previous rounds. This project supports emerging artists in the critical transition to professional life, thanks to the support of the RBC Emerging Artists Project.

Guelph visual and media artists, musicians, and cultural managers can apply now until Sunday, September 20 at 11:59 pm online at guelpharts.ca. The project pairs emerging creative thinkers with established professionals in their field. Emerging artists and Mentors will engage in at least four to six hours of mentorship sessions throughout the months of October – November, to share experiences and perspectives. This is an opportunity to connect with a like-minded creative while either developing professional networks and business and management skills needed for creative careers in Guelph, or gaining coaching and mentorship skills while accessing professional resources, making new connections, and helping emerging artists connect and learn within Guelph’s creative community.

The emerging artists’ mentorship experience will culminate in a group exhibition of their work that they plan, promote, and install with support from their mentors. Mentees and mentors will also have the opportunity to be featured on Guelph Arts Council’s various platforms including social media and eNews. This year, training and mentorship sessions will happen in accordance with public health recommendations, and an in-person exhibition will be coordinated. GAC will assist in organizing online spaces for sessions as needed.

All Guelph artists who are interested are welcome to apply online as an emerging artist, musician, or cultural manager by filling out a simple, online form here or as a professional mentor by filling out the form here. The Guelph Emerging Artist Mentorship Project is curated to provide meaningful interactions within each pair. Mentees and mentors will be carefully selected and paired together based on common interests, goals, experiences, as well as commonalities in artistic practices and endeavours.

In a time that leaves creative thinkers longing for interaction, innovation, and creativity, and maybe even wondering what comes next in their professional career, the Guelph Emerging Artist Mentorship Project is the perfect place to express concerns, learn from others, network, build on professional development, gain critical skills in the arts industry, and prepare for the future of the arts sector.

Guelph Arts Council is grateful for the support of the University of Guelph’s School of Fine Art and Music.
