Busy Mount Forest intersection flagged for all-way stop

MOUNT FOREST – Stop signs could be headed for one of the busiest intersections in the township if approved during a council meeting next week. 

Analyzing traffic patterns in a new report, staff have determined that installing stop signs east and west of Durham Street at the intersection of Durham and Normanby to create an all-way stop intersection will assist with traffic calming.

An intersection notorious for near misses located near Victoria Cross Public School, the area was previously discussed in council after a woman and her son were allegedly almost hit by a car outside the school in December in December despite a crossing guard being in the street with a stop sign up. 

Of the four crossing guards stationed in Mount Forest, two are stationed near Durham St.; one at the Normanby intersection and another at Main St. 

According to the report, there has been an increase in traffic and specific incidents that threaten the safety of students and municipal employees in the past few years, particularly at this intersection as it is "one of the busiest school crossings."

The issue will be discussed in full during a council meeting next Monday.
