BEYOND LOCAL: Fatal snowplow collision turns dream to nightmare for Mexican couple

'My daughter wanted to buy a house, she had many dreams of having her own things' said mother of the deceased 26-year-old Cynthia Cisneros

BRADFORD - Two young women came to Canada from Mexico two months ago, chasing dreams of a better life.

That dream became a nightmare for the married couple on Friday morning when one of the women was killed after being struck by a privately operated snowplow tractor, while her spouse was seriously injured.

Their identities have been revealed by Latino-Canadian news source Genesis 360. The news outlet says Cynthia Cisneros and Juanita Solorio, both 26 years old and from Mexico, were struck while crossing Veterans Drive in south-end Barrie early Friday morning.

Cisneros died at the scene and Solorio is in hospital with serious injuries.

According to the Spanish news source, the pair had been working as cleaners at a nearby car dealership and were crossing the road at Veterans Drive to start work at the dealership next door on Mapleview Drive when they were struck by the snowplow.

The snowplow, which was driven by a 22-year-old woman, was going westbound on Mapleview Drive and turning south onto Veterans Drive.

Cisneros' mother, Maria Benitez, says her daughter had only been in Canada for two months.

“I wanted her to work here in Michoacan (a Mexican state where she lives, but) they pay very little,” she explained.

“My daughter wanted to buy a house. She had many dreams of having her own things,” Benitez said when asked why her daughter had come to Canada.

Benitez is now waiting on her daughter’s body to be transported back to Mexico, which she says could take up to three weeks.

The Barrie police investigation is ongoing. Investigators are reaching out to anyone who may have information about the collision that can help them. Police told BarrieToday they will be using a Spanish translator to speak with Solorio to get a better understanding of what happened.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision or who may have video is asked to contact Const. Allport of the Barrie Police Service at 705-725-7025, ext. 2913 or by email at [email protected]. You can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or leave an anonymous tip online here.
