570 NEWS has confirmed an employee at the Toyota plant in Cambridge has tested positive for COVID-19.
A spokesperson with Toyota said, that on Wednesday, they were notified by Hamilton Public Health that a Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada team member, who works in the North Plant, tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
The employee last worked on March 12, and the worker has not been back at the plant since.
"Our thoughts are with our affected employee and their well-being." said Michael Bouliane, in an emailed statement to 570 NEWS.
"The TMMC health centre immediately contacted public health authorities and followed appropriate protocols. Our affected employee - as well as those identified as having had close contact with the individual - will remain in self-isolation and will not return to work until being cleared by a physician." he added.
Bouliane said they've added deep cleaning and disinfecting all areas in which the employees were working, and will continue to follow the guidance of public health authorities. "The health and safety of our team members, business partners and communities is our top priority."
570 NEWS also learned some workers walked off the job Thursday morning, however many employees are still working.
The automaker announced late Wednesday, it would be closing its plants on Monday and Tuesday, so they can thoroughly clean their manufacturing facilities.
