Guelph General Hospital is putting out a call to the community to help it fill as many as 100 part and full-time positions to help it manage the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, Guelph General Hospital (GGH) sent the request as a news release to local media partners in Guelph with a link to its careers page.

“We expect this demand to continue in the coming months,” said Marianne Walker, GGH president and CEO. “We owe it to our community to do all we can to care for patients and families, as well as ensure the well-being of our staff. Filling these temporary roles will help and may also provide short-term employment for people who are not presently working.”

In an email, Perry Hagerman, senior communications specialist with GGH, said a hiring blitz like this has never been done at the hospital.

"These are unprecedented times and we need to be ready for whatever is coming," said Hagerman.

The recruitment is happening now so GGH can get applicants oriented and trained, if necessary, said Hagerman.

"That way, they’ll be ready to go when the anticipated surge in patients arrives," said Hagerman. "Plus, experience across the world has shown there will be a number of staff off at any time due to self-isolation or with illness."

In the release, Walker said extensive safety training, including diligence with infection control precautions, will be provided. “Every possible measure is taken to support the continued well-being of everyone in our Hospital,” she notes.

Positions available include clinical and non-clinical roles. Career listings on Tuesday include: registered nurses and registered practical nurses, as well as dietary aides, electricians, general maintenance staff, plumbers and shipping and receiving positions, among others.

Walker says current staff have stepped up “in an extraordinary way,” working longer hours and volunteering to fill extra shifts. “I have never been more proud of our staff. However, we cannot expect this of them in the long term.”

Positions will fill both day and night shifts and may be full-time or part-time and students are encouraged to apply. Previous hospital experience is not required, said the news release.

Hagerman noted the positions are temporary at this time.

Experience in other healthcare or clinic settings is welcome.

“We need people in our community to step up and join our staff in making a difference,” said Walker in the release.
