High schools in Guelph are among those allowed to reopen under a full-attendance model in September, with in-school classes five days a week.

On Thursday the province announced its back-to-school guidelines, with full attendance at all elementary schools and most high schools being the preferred model.

There are 15 designated school boards would see high school students in class 50 per cent of the time and doing distance education the rest of the time, neither the Upper Grand District School Board or the Wellington Catholic District School board are among them.

Both school boards in Waterloo Region are designated.

In all cases, parents will have the choice of whether to send their children to school or learn remotely.

Most schools will open Sept. 8.

Students in grades 4 to 12 will be required to wear masks, with reasonable exceptions, and those younger will be encouraged, but not required, to wear masks indoors.

Other measures to enhance safety are also being put in place, including keeping cohorts of students together as much as possible, enhanced cleaning procedures, keeping classes together for lunch and recess, discouraging field trips, outdoor phys ed classes whenever possible, lunches should be eaten in classrooms, assemblies and concerts should be avoided and schools can offer clubs and organized sports if physical distancing is possible.
