A hospital in Taiwan has donated 14,000 surgical masks to frontline Guelph healthcare workers.

MacKay Memorial Hospital in Taiwan donated the masks, which were delivered to the hospital last week by representatives from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto, the Canadian MacKay Committee, the Taiwanese Canadian Association and the Kitchener-Waterloo Taiwanese Canadian Association.

The donation marked the 140th anniversary of the Taiwan hospital, which was founded by Canadian missionary Dr. George Leslie MacKay.

The CEO of the Guelph General Hospital, Suzanne Bone received  the donation and thanked Taiwan for helping to keep the hospital's front-line workers and patients healthy," said a news release.

Ten thousand of the surgical masks will be used at Guelph General Hospital, 2,000 at St. Joseph's nursing home, and 2,000 by the medical centre of Dr. Kyrie Little, whose grandfather, Dr. John Llewellyn Little, was a former superintendent of McKay Memorial Hospital.

Wilma Welsh, a Guelph resident who lived in Taiwan for six years, was the key coordinator of these donations.

Catherine Hsu, the direcgtor general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto, said the donation was a way for the hospital to give back and show he Taiwanese people’s friendship to Canadians in these difficult times. She said this effort also demonstrated the spirit of "Taiwan can help,” an initiative that the government and people commit to making contributions to the global health network.
