NEWS RELEASE

WPG PUBLIC HEALTH

*************************

On Thursday, February 11, WDG Public Health announced that a previously-resolved case of COVID-19 in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph had been identified as a case of the COVID-19 UK variant after genetic sequencing by Public Health Ontario. The individual received a positive test for COVID-19 on January 13 and the case was considered resolved on January 21 after the individual completed their self-isolation.

As a result of this new information from PHO, WDG Public Health is re-examining all elements of this case – including high-risk contacts – to determine whether any further cases or additional risk to the public exists. Based on the investigation, which is ongoing, we can share the following:

  1. There are five related resolved cases which are either confirmed or suspected variant cases.
  2. These individuals traveled outside of Canada together. The initial case is resident of WDG, who contracted the virus and completed their self-isolation outside of Canada.
  3. From this initial case, the four additional individuals tested positive (or were suspected positives) and completed their self-isolation upon their return to Canada – three cases in WDG (one of which is the case sequenced by PHO) and one in Toronto.
  4. The investigation is ongoing but, no immediate action from the public is required at this time.
