The University of Guelph plans on offering a "hybrid" of online and in-person course offerings this fall.

It also says that it is planning to offer modified residences to students if possible.

The information was contained in an update posted on the U of G's website by incoming president and current  provost and vice-president Charlotte Yates.

"I am happy to report that we are developing comprehensive plans for a gradual, phased approach for returning to work and for the fall semester," Yates said.

"We are planning for a “hybrid” fall semester, which means that some courses and activities will be taught and hosted in-person and some will be offered remotely," Yates said. "This approach will allow us to combine high-quality teaching and research with our renowned student living and learning experience."

She cautioned that given the complex nature of the pandemic, the public health situation can change quickly and the U of G could change its plans.

"Outside of the classroom, we will continue to provide excellent student services and supports including experiential learning, co-ops and internships, clubs, athletics, and extracurriculars and residence programs. Some of these will be offered virtually and others in-person."

The school is still working on the details of how courses will be delivered.

"Physical distancing requirements mean that the look, scope and feel of our campus will be very different, and the planning and work to make this happen will be significant. The lists of tasks are long and complex, from organizing thousands of classes and classrooms to modifying residences, food services, libraries, and research and work spaces," Yates said.

"I want to assure you that we are developing a comprehensive, safe protocol for students, faculty and staff to follow during phased reopening of our campuses."

Until the provincial state of emergency is lifted, the U of G is limited in what it can allow. That state of emergency expires May 29 but could be extended.
