LETTER: Can we beautify Guelph again?

Parts of Speedvale Avenue look like 'a long stretch of wasteland,' says reader

GuelphToday received the following letter to the editor from Cecelia Coulas who wants to see more beautification projects in Guelph, specifically in the Speedvale Avenue area:

I invite anyone to take a drive down Speedvale Avenue between Victoria Road and Elmira Road and try to find the beauty – any little bit of it.

Sidewalks were torn up for a cancelled project and replaced with asphalt, now old and worn. Boulevards were torn up and left unfinished, long lines of dirt and rock. The railway tracks on the corner of Speedvale and Woolwich run alongside a corner filled with the same dirt and rock. Corner after corner hosts an empty lot that is now just derelict and ugly.

There is no green lawn. There is no corner garden with shrubs or flowers. There is only a long stretch of wasteland.

I know this is not the only street like this, but it is the one I happen to drive on every day.

Can we do something? Can we beautify Guelph again? I can only hope.

Cecelia Coulas
