GuelphToday received the following letter from Daniel Cardoso regarding new transportation legislation:

Guelph City council’s new legislation has a strong emphasis on promoting cycling, walking, and public transportation as modes of transportation in an attempt to reduce vehicular greenhouse gas emissions. My question is where is the emphasis on electric vehicles?

I applaud efforts to increase the mode share of cycling and walking, however vehicular transportation will always be popular in a society where people value convenience and privacy. Therefore, the City should be equally promoting transitioning to electric vehicles. There are two main ways they could accomplish this.

The first is increasing Guelph’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure by investing in more charging systems. To date, via their website, Guelph has only 24 city-owned chargers across the City.

The second strategy would be to increase their electric vehicle fleet. They have made great strides in starting to transition to electric busses. However, most of the City vehicles I see on the road are gas or diesel powered. Having worked in the City of Toronto, I have seen first-hand their on-going transition to an electric fleet.

As a municipality that prides itself on being green, they need to be at the forefront of having a green fleet.
