GuelphToday received the following letter from Sian Matwey.

Dear Guelph

I know I sound like a broken record but there is a large group of people in our community really suffering with these COVID shutdowns!

As someone who has spent her life supporting the most vulnerable in our community I must admit there is a growing anger in my heart! Frankly, I am very frustrated by the people complaining that they can't golf or eat at their favourite restaurant! Yes, this SUCKS, I get that, but take a moment and think about those people living with intellectual disablities ... especially those who live with autism or fetal alcohol syndrome! At least you have a choice in what you do with your day!

On Monday I walked by a young man who was literally walking in circles and pulling his hair. I stopped to ask if he was ok and he was on the verge of tears when he told me "the government was extending the shut down again and WHAT WAS HE GOING TO DO?"

I am BEGGING Guelph to turn your anger and frustration into good and reach out to these in need! Everyone knows of at least one person who they could help while at the same time helping local businesses! Order from Play with Clay, Wyndham Art or Simply Wonderful Toys and make a care package! Knock on their door and ask what their favourite restaurant is and go buy them a meal! Don't let lack of funds stop you .... make cookies or draw on their side walk with your children to brighten their day!

Come on Guelph ... we are sooo much better than this. COVID will end but while we wait let's shine as a city that cares! Let's set a powerful example for our children!

Thanks for your patience and I am looking forward to being INSPIRED!

Sian Matwey
