GuelphToday received the following letter to the editor from reader Andrea Baker about dairy research centre at University in University of Guelph.

I am extremely disheartened to hear that 2.6 million taxpayer dollars are being wasted on dairy industry research at the University of Guelph. Contrary to what MP Lloyd Longfield says, propping up this dying industry does not benefit Canadians. Lloyd Longfield should already know that dairy hasn’t been recommended by the Canadian Food Guide since the Liberal Party of Canada updated it in 2019. Animal agriculture is also one of the most environmentally destructive forces in Canada, using land, water, grain and emitting enormous amounts of methane and manure pollution.

The huge amount of money doled out to this disastrous industry would be better spent elsewhere, such as programs that make healthy and sustainable foods affordable for all Canadians. Let’s start shifting to an equitable plant-based food system and let dairy die.
