Given the fact that it has been/is earth week, imagine my surprise that a thirty year old tree was cut down in Waverly park to make room for an expanded play park.
The play park is very welcome, however, I question the need to cut down the tree. Young families depend on the shade from the trees as a place for their strollers and to sit with their young ones.
I have spoken with city employees and it is questionable to me whether an actual plan has been made which could have protected the tree.
As an absolute coincidence that tree was planted by my daughter as a grade 5 project in the mid seventies.
