LETTER: Guelph needs to accommodate more bike routes

The senior cyclist says there is no route for him to cycle from home to any store that doesn't put him at risk due to lack of cycling infrastructure

GuelphToday received the following Letter to the Editor from Ed Davey in response to a recent letter regarding the lack of bike routes in Guelph.

Further to the discussion about cycling in Guelph. I recently downloaded the cycling map for the city and discovered that there is no route for me to cycle from my home at Watson Parkway North and Grange to any shopping that doesn't put me at high risk in traffic because of the lack of cycling infrastructure.

As a senior, I lack confidence in busy thoroughfares and am totally intimidated by the monstrous trucks that rule the city's byways.

This is infuriatingly frustrating for me as I bought our house with the understanding, 15 years ago, that the property at Watson and Stargate was owned by Loblaws and was designated for a grocery store. Still waiting after…

I was buoyed by the opening of the Ethnic Market in the old Len's Mill location, but there is no safe route to get there. Ditto: Bullfrog Mall and Eramosa Zehrs.

Given the city regularly trumpets its “green” credentials, progress has been less than timely. There really is no excuse for cyclists having to resort to using sidewalks, especially since Paris, France, with a proper, progressive government, was able to implement a major cycling network in a very short time.
