LETTER: In the midst of a long haul, a little patience doesn't hurt

A little patience can go a long way for one reader

GuelphToday received the following letter from reader Rick Lackovic regarding a recent encounter at a local grocery store.

I only try to go out once a week to do groceries.

If you haven't shopped at the No Frills on Silvercreek, the store has customers line up along the far side of the store. There was a bit of a lineup but everyone was making the best of it.

There was a female customer talking on her cell phone until she got frustrated by not being able to go through the end of the aisle.

As she turned around a young guy was stocking the freezers.

The poor guy got an earful from this customer because she couldn't go through. She wouldn't let up so because she was standing close to me, I told her that it was because of COVID.

She didn't even look at me while she said "I wasn't talking to you."

She then turned around and just continued to talk to the person on the other end of her phone.

When she was out of ear shot, the employee thanked me for speaking up because it was something he couldn't do.

This is a minimum wage employee who doesn't need to be accosted by rude customers. I'm always amazed with the people who just haven't "got it" after 16 months of multiple lockdowns.

It may not have been convenient for this customer but COVID hasn't been convenient for any of us.

If this customer is reading this there's only one thing that I can recommend and that is to be patient and thank essential staff instead of berating them.
