Dear Members of the Board of Directors of the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association:
I am writing to express my concern about the cancellation of Guelph-Wellington Seniors Association's Community Support Services.
Even though I live in Kitchener and not Guelph, I feel compelled to speak out.
I am a senior who volunteers with the recreation department in a long-term care community. I know from personal experience the benefits of exercise, social interaction, and good nutrition for the elderly. More relevant to this situation, I witness how those who are isolated gain confidence and a sense of validation when someone takes the time to be part of their lives whatever the activity. Withdrawing that contact will be devastating for many on a very personal and emotional level.
As a volunteer, I cannot effectively help people without an existing infrastructure of staff and programmes.
As a retired employee at a university, I know a bit about the politics of funding and grants. Even that basic understanding tells me that returning United Way funds is an unretractable move that will undermine the Board’s credibility.
I urge you to reconsider your decision.
Yours sincerely,
Leslie Macredie
