Letter: Traffic behaviour is getting worse each year

I’m writing as a Guelph city school bus driver and taxi driver, over my concerns with driving in Guelph. In my opinion, despite the efforts by police and others, traffic and driver behaviour is worsening year over year.

EVERY DAY I observe 2-3 main traffic violations:

  1. Passing school buses when the overhead lights are signaling a stop and/or the stop sign is out
  2. Speeding up at yellow lights and cutting off drivers attempting to clear intersections
  3. Failing to observe correct right of way turns - especially at intersections.

The rules are clear if one cares to learn them. It is illegal to pass a school bus even if the stop sign is NOT OUT when the NFL’s are flashing! It is illegal to SPEED through an intersection on a YELLOW LIGHT as it changes to RED.

The vehicle to the RIGHT of you has the right of way at a 4-way stop. All vehicles must stop when a school bus is stopped to drop off/pick up at an intersection.

I send in police reports daily. The traffic department of the police force is chronically underfunded in this city for the growth it is experiencing. We need to do a better job of informing ourselves and others of what makes for safer roads. Or pretty soon, there’s going to be another dead child.
