A local organization is asking you to ‘paws’ for a moment and post a picture of your pet during Mental Health week.

From May 3 to May 9, the Suicide Awareness Council of Wellington-Dufferin is running ‘Paws-a-thon’ – 1,000 Paws for Suicide Prevention.

The campaign aims to raise suicide awareness by encouraging residents to share photos of their beloved animals on social media, using the hashtags #pawsathon2021, #1000paws and #sacwdsuicideawareness. To learn more about the event and how to participate, click here.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to heighten anxiety, fear and social isolation, these and other life challenges can lead to individuals developing thoughts of suicide.

However, council coordinator Heather Glenister explains pets can help foster mental well-being, calling it the ‘pet-effect.’

“They offer unconditional love, don’t judge, are accepting and they can be entertaining,” says Glenister in a release about pets, “They can help us de-stress, create routines, help us to live in the moment and provide companionship. These are protective factors that reduce suicide.”

The release says pets can be also be a starting point when talking about suicide, and can help those struggling connect with others to seek further help.

Glenister notes not everyone has a pet, but there are other ways people can help manage their mental health.

“Hobbies, exercise and staying connected with family and friends are great examples.”
