A 37-year-old Guelph man was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre after a single-vehicle collision late this morning on the 407 Westbound at Hurontario Street in Brampton.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the Ontario Provincial Police said the man was being treated for critical injuries after the collision, which sent his truck and flatbed trailer of concrete blocks into the ditch and grassy area between the 407 Westbound and the Hurontario Street exit.

“What we believe happened, around 11:30 this morning, this truck was travelling 407 Westbound when it was approaching Hurontario Street he had a rapid deflation of his right steering axle tire,” said Schmidt during a live broadcast at the scene.

The cab of the truck was crushed on the driver’s side and Schmidt said the driver was lucky to be alive.

“The driver was trapped inside the vehicle for some time,” said Schmidt.

The entire highway was shut down, said Schmidt, while an Ornge air ambulance landed to transport the driver to a Toronto-area trauma centre.

An OPP reconstruction team was on scene this afternoon to investigate and determine the cause of the collision.
