Appeal date set for proposed fridge/freezer plant zoning

Guelph/Eramosa residents’ group objects to Minus Forty facility on Jones Baseline

Correction: This article initially provided an incorrect start date for the appeal hearing. The appeal will begin February 13, not March 13 as previously stated.

A hearing will be held early next year to determine if a refrigerator and freezer manufacturing plant can set up shop between Guelph and Rockwood.

An appeal of Guelph/Eramosa township council’s 2021 decision to rezone the 26-acre property at 5063 Jones Baseline to allow Minus Forty to relocate its Georgetown plant is scheduled to begin on February 13.

The Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) hearing, to be held virtually, is set to begin at 10 a.m. It's currently slated to take 12 days.

In a 4-1 vote, township council changed the zoning from agricultural land to rural industrial, as requested by company officials.

Jones Baseline Community Inc. – a group of area residents – filed the OLT appeal in large part based on a provincial decree made 30 years ago.

A previous new release from the group stated the former Township of Eramosa was “forced” by the provincial government to designate the lands as future rural employment in the early ‘90s and no changes were made as the Jones Baseline neighbourhood grew and earned hamlet status.
