Archaeological study resumes on Baker Street, under hard tent

Study began in September, expected to be done in June

Efforts to unearth previously missed bone fragments below the former Baker Street parking lot have resumed following a winter pause.

“A tent structure has been installed on-site to allow crews to continue working during any unpredictable spring weather,” states a post on the city’s website, dated Wednesday.

The work, a precursor to the Baker District redevelopment going ahead, was put on hold in January.

At that time the study had resulted in 83 grave shafts and 37 distinct discoveries of human remains being discovered at the former cemetery site.

The archaeological study is expected to wrap up in June. It began in late September.

Also included in the study is the small Wyndham Street parking lot which sits directly beside the main lot.

Once the clearance work is completed, all remains found will be documented and re-interred at Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery.

The parking lot was permanently closed at the end of September in order to allow for the archaeological work to get underway.

Used as a cemetery for 26 years, the triangular block that is the currently Baker Street municipal parking lot was the site of an all-faith cemetery from 1827 to 1853.
