The City of Guelph invites artists and artist groups to apply for a chance to create one of four, site-specific exterior murals on Wilson Street. The deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2019.
The City of Guelph has received funding from Ontario’s Main Street Revitalization Initiative to revitalize its main streets. Phase one of the funding will be used for four projects on Wilson Street.
“The artwork created with this funding will enhance an important gateway in our downtown,” says Stacey Dunnigan, the city’s manager of culture and tourism. “We’re excited about the launch of this initiative and the opportunity it creates for artists.”
Artists may apply for as many of the four sites as they wish, however, only one artist or group will be selected per site.
This open call to artists follows a two-stage selection process. The first stage is a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) asking artists to submit their credentials, experience and a preliminary vision for a mural. Full design concepts are not required at this stage.
Once the first stage submission process closes on Feb. 1, the City’s Public Art Advisory Committee will choose a maximum of three finalists per site. These shortlisted artists will move onto the second stage of the process, receiving an honorarium to develop their final concepts.
Budgets vary for each site, and artists working in any mural medium, style or technique may apply. The artwork for the this mural project should celebrate community spirit and take into account the neighbourhood’s identity, and the cultural, historical, and natural attributes of the site.

The Main Street Revitalization Initiative is a $26 million fund from the Government of Ontario. The fund invests in the revitalization of main street areas to support and grow local businesses by driving tourism and encouraging public investment in municipal and public infrastructure.
