NEWS RELEASE
SILENCE

This Saturday evening, Oct. 20, the Silence Presents concert series is proud to bring Guelph jazz lovers the award-winning, genre-bending, Toronto-based duo of musicians David Buchbinder and Dave Restivo, who will create frames for improvisation with jazz and classical repertoire and their own, uncategorizable compositions, as they spin sound out of nothingness, right into your ears. The duo format is by nature - flexible, free and intimate. This grouping of two mature performer/composers at the top of their respective games also creates worlds of sound, as it brings together the sonorities of trumpet, fluegelhorn and piano (brass and wood/metal).

Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:30 p.m.) at Silence, 46 Essex Street
Tickets: $15 - convenient online advance ticket ordering online (cash only at the door)

David Buchbinder is a Juno award-winning trumpeter, composer and cultural innovator. He leads numerous music groups, composes for concert, theatre, film and television, presents large-scale performance projects and has toured extensively in North and South America and Europe. He creates “fiercely imaginative music that swaggers with volatile rhythms cushioning endlessly changing modes” that is “highly original and accessible.” His trumpet playing has been compared to Freddie Hubbard (Globe and Mail) and was called “sultry and diaphanous, weaving gloriously sinuous lines.” His jazz compositions express a unique voice equally influenced by the masters (Mingus, Monk, Ellington), Eastern European and Middle Eastern sounds, and the circus of his own imagination.

David leads the Flying Bulgars, his eponymous Jazz Ensemble, Nomadica and, most recently, his Odessa/Havana project. David has brought his jazz compositions and ensembles to prestigious venues across North America including the Festival of New Drumpfet Music and (this past April) a week-long residency at John Zorn’s The Stone in NYC. His work as a trumpeter and composer has been profiled in major publications around the world including a 2014 profile in Downbeat magazine. More here.

Dave Restivo is one of Canada's most respected and influential jazz artists. He is a three-time winner of the National Jazz Awards' Pianist of the Year Award and is listed in the current edition of Canadian Who's Who. He is well known for his work with Rob McConnell's Boss Brass and Tentet, the Mike Murley Quintet, and legendary songwriter Marc Jordan. He has also performed and recorded with Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Mel Torme, Pat LaBarbera, Ingrid Jensen, Christine Jensen, Molly Johnson, Moe Koffman, Joe LaBarbera, Mark Whitfield, Marcus Belgrave, Joey Baron, Curtis Fuller, Stacy Rowles, Jane Bunnett, Phil Dwyer, Tim Hagans, Steve Kirby, Jeff Hamilton, Alex Acuna, Gene Bertoncini, Phillip Harper, Don Thompson, Ed Bickert, Guido Basso, P.J. Dave has served on the music faculty at the Banff Centre for the Arts and St. Francis Xavier University, and currently teaches at Humber College and the University of Toronto. More here.
