OPP investigates motor vehicle collision involving a bear

WELLINGTON NORTH TOWNSHIP – On July 1, 2016 at approximately 1:18 a.m. members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a motor vehicle collision involving 2007 Chevrolet and a small bear on Side Road 3 and Wellington Road 6 in Wellington North Township.

There was no damage to the vehicle however, the bear was badly injured and had to be dispatched. 

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) was notified.  

OPP want to remind residents that even though the number of incidents involving bears in Wellington County are extremely rare they have been observed within the County as well as bordering Counties over the last few years. If an encounter does occur police want to be notified as well as the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).

Black bears reside throughout the majority of Ontario, mainly in forested locations where it is most desirable for food, refuge, and den sites.  They generally try to avoid humans but may attack if they feel threatened or are predatory.

For emergency encounters with a bear - call 911. 

Examples of emergency encounters would be:

  • A bear entering a school yard when school is in session
  • A bear entering or trying to enter a residence
  • A bear wandering into a public gathering
  • A bear killing livestock/pets and lingering at the site
  • A bear stalking people and lingering around for an extended period of time

For non-emergency encounters call 1-888-310-1122. 

Examples of non-emergency encounters would be:

  • A bear roaming around and checking garbage cans
  • A bear breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored
  • A bear in a tree
  • A bear pulling down a bird feeder or knocking over a barbecue
  • A bear moving through a backyard or field but is NOT lingering
