NEWS RELEASE
GUELPH BLACK HERITAGE SOCIETY
*************************
The Guelph Black Heritage Society continues its partnership with the Royal City Brewing Company by presenting Lantern Ale Re-IGNITED, taking place at 199 Victoria Rd. S. Unit C8 on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., free admission, donations welcome.

Step out, listen to the music of DJ Rashid and enjoy some food with a drink of Lantern Ale, a distinct artisanal brew in honour of Black History Month. Royal City Brewing Company is pleased to kick off the 2018 Black History Month’s Celebration of Freedom by presenting the Lantern Ale in the tap room. Lanterns, prior to and during the American Civil War, were used as beacons by 'safe' houses along the Underground Railroad which was a network of people and paths that helped slaves escape to freedom and in particular to the Queen's Bush settlement just north of Guelph.

The lantern was not only a sign of a safe haven but a symbol of hard won freedom. Feel the love of the lantern and raise a glass to freedom with us.

Donations will be directed to the GBHS Rampin’ It Up! campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to achieve wheelchair accessibility into Heritage Hall via the Freedom Ramp, foyer and accessible washroom. The fundraising goal is $50,000 and we will accept donations of labour and materials to help off-set construction costs. The Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS) is a registered charity. Registration # 80158 3907 RR0001. Tax receipts will be issued for donations.

Since 2011 Guelph Black Heritage Society continues to create a cultural, historical and social community centre within Guelph and Wellington County at Heritage Hall, formerly known as the British Methodist Episcopal Church, a significant destination on the 19th-century Underground Railroad slave escape route.
