An adult man died at Conestogo Lake Sunday afternoon after a suspected drowning.

Cst. Kirk MacDonald with Wellington OPP confirmed the body of a male was recovered Sunday evening after an hours-long search and recovery operation.

MacDonald said at approximately 12:20 Sunday afternoon, Wellington OPP, Mapleton Fire and Rescue and Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Services responded to a report of a possible drowning at Conestogo Lake in the Township of Mapleton.

It was reported that an adult male was swimming with family members next to a stationary boat and at one point failed to resurface.

"The victim went in the water to assist a child that went in the water from a boat," MacDonald said in an email. "The child was wearing a life jacket and was taken out of the water by a witness."

An OPP helicopter, Ornge Air Ambulance, Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue and the OPP underwater search and rescue unit also assisted in the search.

MacDonald said the man’s body was recovered around 8:45 p.m. in the vicinity of where he was last seen in the lake.

The identity of the man has not been released.
