Friday March 8 is the inaugural Sleeman “Pick up the Tab” night at the Sleeman Centre when the Guelph Storm host the Saginaw Spirit. Fans are encouraged to bring in their aluminum can tabs to the game for donation to the Elora Legion’s Branch 229 “Tabs for Wheelchairs” program. Monies raised from recycled tabs will go towards purchasing new wheelchairs, motorized scooters and walkers across Canada. This is part of a campaign starting February 18th through March 8th, during which Guelph Storm fans will be encouraged to drop off tabs during their games.

“Tabs for Wheelchairs” started over 30 years ago with members of the Elora Legion conversing over their infamous “BS table." They had started saving can tabs but soon discovered collecting tabs for wheelchairs was an urban legend. Wanting to make this a reality and spurred on by their dedication to helping others, they enlisted the help of a local scrap dealer to turn the tabs into cash. To date, the Elora and Cooksville Branch 582 Legions collectively have donated over 2,662 wheelchairs across Canada.

Aluminum tabs are 100 per cent recyclable and come from a variety of cans and other consumer goods. Only aluminum can be used by “Tabs for Wheelchairs” as aluminum is a nonferrous material, meaning they will not stick to a magnet.

John Sleeman, Founder and Chairman of Sleeman Breweries, has been an avid tab collector donating to “Tabs for Wheelchairs”. “We hope to encourage local fans to start saving their tabs or bring in existing collections to the March 8th game. We believe there are many tab collectors out there and we want to encourage people to keep can tabs out of landfills. A large influx of tabs will give the Legion greater reach to assist people with new wheelchairs and other assistive devices” says Sleeman.

The Guelph Storm and Management are excited about the Sleeman “Pick Up the Tab” game. “For the Guelph Storm, the chance to be part of such a wonderful cause by bringing our fans together with long time partners like Sleeman Breweries and local Legion branches is such an exciting opportunity. Our great fans have stepped up so many times in the past to support local causes and we can’t wait to see what we can do together for the Tabs for Wheelchairs program," said Matt Newby, Storm Vice President Business Operations.

Fans can get involved before the March 8 game by spreading the word on Facebook or Twitter. Talk to friends and family to find ongoing tab collections that are in homes, businesses, service clubs and other contacts. Tab collection bins will be at games starting Family Day Feb. 18.
