The hot season has brought heated construction activity throughout the city of Guelph.
The framework for new retail outlets in the south end is going up, storeys are being added to apartment towers in the west, and small and large pockets of land are being filled in all directions.
Not everyone in the city is happy about the rapid growth of the city, but much of the activity is happening out of a sense of obligation. As part of the Province of Ontario’s Growth Plan for the Golden Horseshoe Area, Guelph is required to accommodate more people and more jobs.
The provincially mandate growth target for the city is 175,000 residents and 92,000 jobs by 2031 – just 15 years from now.
Population growth has been steady over the last number of years. In 2006, the population stood at 116,000, and is now pushing 130,000.
The photo gallery is sample of some of the projects underway to housing more people and create more jobs and services.
