A busy and potentially-dangerous intersection in Rockwood is about to get a lot safer.
The intersection of Highway 7 and MacLennan Road/Dunbar Street on the town's southern end will be getting a full set of traffic lights, hopefully in time for the 2018-19 school year.
Guelph MPP Liz Sandals, Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott and Guelph-Eramosa Township Mayor Chris White made the announcement Friday afternoon at Ecole Harris Mill Public School.
Roughly 300 students attend the school, many of them crossing at the intersection, where a crossing guard is in place during school hours.
The crossing guard will remain once the lights are installed.
"It was a long road to get here ... the bottom line is greater safety," said White.
Arnott called it a "team effort" and credited the work of parents how organized a petition that had 400 signatures calling for traffic lights at that location.
Sandals said a traffic light was definitely needed as people come "flying around" the corner northbound on Highway 7 from Acton.
Design work will now take place and the work will go out for tender.
