Meghan and Fraser Clark were all set to close down their North Bay camping supply store when their full-time jobs brought them to Guelph.

But when the couple realized that Guelph was a little underserviced when it comes to supplies for the serious camper, they decided to bring the store with them.

The Outland Supply Co. is now open at 11 Quebec St. in Downtown Guelph.

It sells everything from outerwear, sleeping bags and boots to hand-crafted knives and hatchets.

“We were originally going to close our store then were surprised to find there wasn’t an independent store here,” said Meghan. “We thought there was an opportunity here and so far the reception has been good.”

Fraser is the hard-core camper of the family, spending “60 or 70 days” in past year’s roughing it in the woods.

“The plan is eventually for Fraser to not work his other job any more and to just work here,” said Meghan, who first met her future husband while rooming with his sister at university in Ottawa.

The couple has two children.

Outland Supply Co. is an independent store, with the Clark’s choosing all the things that are sold. Fraser is familiar with almost all the products.

“We try to carry brands that the big chains don’t carry,” Meghan said, “some unique stuff that you won’t tend to find elsewhere.”

Most of their product line is also higher end and aimed at the serious outdoorsperson.

“We stay away from entry-level goods … we typically go into stuff that you know is going to get used more than twice a year and is going to last a long time,” Meghan said.

“We sell higher end stuff, for someone who is going to be a bit more discerning about their camping equipment,” Fraser said.

“Pretty much everything in the store I’ve had something on. I do a log of back country trips and I use it all. We trust everything in the store,” Fraser said.

The store is open seven days a week, with reduced hours on the weekend. Check out their Facebook page for more details.

The grand opening is set for Aug. 26, with deals, draws and refreshments.
