Retail cannabis store being proposed for city's north end

Application is for 739 Woolwich St., across from the Beer Store and beside the former McDonald's location

A numbered company is looking to put a retail cannabis store in the city’s north end.

2448254 Ontario Inc. has made an application to the city’s Committee of Adjustment for a variance that would allow a retail cannabis store at 739 Woolwich St., a detached building across the road from the Beer Store that is currently the home of Fleuristic Garden and Flower Studio.

Fleuristiic owner Kalie Gies said a potential buyer of the property submitted the application with their permission.

Fleuristic Garen and Flower Studio will continue to operate regardless of the application's outcome, either at 739 Woolwich or in a new location, Gies said.

The proposed location is adjacent to a lot where the a collection of health providers, including the Canadian Mental Health Association, plan on building The Centre for Children's Developmental & Mental Health Services, which they recently told council would open in the winter of 2021 if everything goes according to plan.

The property where the applicant wants to open the cannabis store is currently zoned service commercial, which does not allow for the proposed use of “retail cannabis sales of cannabis and related supplies,” says the application, which will be heard at the March 12 meeting of the Committee of Adjustment.

“We are proposing to open a cannabis retail store at the subject property in accordance with the Ontario Cannabis Act,” says the application.

“The subject property is in one of the City of Guelph’s approved areas (confirmed by David Wiedrick, Manager Bylaw Compliance, Security and Licensing, Operations Department, City of Guelph) but is not currently zoned for the required use as shown above.”

The applicant says they will be making structural changes to the building to “present a professional image to the community” and comply with provincial regulations for cannabis retail outlets.

The property is 2,385 square metres in size but the retail building is 206 square metres. A small separate greenhouse currently on the property would be removed.

The application was filed on Jan. 22, 2020.

Guelph’s first retail cannabis storefront is expected to be open in the next couple of months on Stone Road.

Fire & Flower Inc. is opening a store at 304 Stone Rd. W., the former Dulux paint store across from Stone Road Mall.
