The final tally of cats the Guelph Humane Society removed from a Guelph apartment earlier this week was 97.

Initially there were 80 cats removed from a two-bedroom apartment on Huron Street, but the humane society said Friday that the final total was 97.

The cats were removed from the apartment after a person contacted the humane society because she was no longer able to take care of the animals.

It turns out the person was being evicted from the apartment because of damage to the plumbing system caused by kitty litter being poured down the drain.

The landlord told GuelphToday that it would cost $20,000 to clean and make repairs to the apartment.

The landlord said he thought the woman had six cats and a dog.

The humane society said it has been "overwhelmed" by community support since news of the cats being surrendered got out.

"Thank you for caring and loving the community’s animals as much as you do and providing these cats the support they desperately needed. We are so grateful for our network of supporters, volunteers, partners and fosters who all stepped up to the challenge. It was a busy, but very rewarding few days for our whole team," said a news release.

Following the basic assessment of medical needs, the humane society said it is getting a better sense of what it will cost for additional and specialized care, but that most of the cats seem to be in fair condition "considering the of number of cats that were living together."

"However, several cats have eye issues and others with additional medical conditions are being monitored closely by our team."
