With the first day of spring approaching, the Guelph-Wellington Master Gardeners (GWMG) have a series of upcoming events planned to celebrate the Year Of The Garden (YOTG).

According to a release from the GWMG, Parliament declared 2022 as the YOTG in Canada. The Canadian Garden Council also confirmed it in honour of the centennial of the ornamental horticulture sector, and the 100th Anniversary of the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association.

Locally, the GWMG is asking residents to plant red to show their pride as a gardener in Canada, visit local gardens in Guelph and attend one of the organization’s many events.

One event organized by the GWMG is a series of free online garden talks by local experts, which will be presented on the second Wednesday of every month. Residents will get an opportunity to meet local master gardeners who will provide timely tips on gardening.

Other events the GWMG has planned to celebrate the YOTG include demonstration workshops, private garden tours, children's activities, educational programs with the Guelph Public Library and more. To learn more about the different events planned for 2022, go to gwmastergardeners.ca.

All events aim to provide advice and inspiration to the local gardening community. This year, the GWMG said residents are being encouraged to reflect on Canada’s rich garden Heritage, celebrate today’s vibrant garden culture and create legacies for a sustainable future.

The Official Garden Days of Canada take place June 11 to June 19, with National Garden Day in Canada taking place on June 18.
