On April 24, the Guelph Chamber of Commerce will host its second annual Women in STEM event and is honoured to announce that Nobel Prize recipient Donna Strickland will be delivering the keynote speech to business and community leaders in attendance.

Dr. Strickland is one of the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for co-inventing Chirped Pulse Amplification with Dr. Gérard Mourou, her PhD supervisor at the time of the discovery.

Now a professor at the University of Waterloo, Dr. Strickland is the third woman in history to win this prestigious award and the first woman to be awarded the prize in 55 years.

“Elevating the discussion on women in STEM is an important aspect of the Guelph Chamber’s efforts to showcase and inspire growth in these fields of study and professional paths,” says Kithio Mwanzia, President & CEO of the Guelph Chamber. “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome and celebrate Dr. Strickland as she is a prime example of the endless possibilities that are available to women in STEM.”

Along with the keynote, this educational and motivating half-day event will feature three short Ted Talks, delivered by local women who are leaders in the STEM fields.

The Women in STEM Conference takes place on Wednesday, April 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Frank Hasenfratz Centre for Excellence in Manufacturing.
