With the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, in relation to plagiarism, local school boards are aware of the use of ChatGPT and are reviewing it for its policies in schools.

“Like other digital technologies it can have utility and be an educational tool which can be used within classroom teaching for a variety of purposes including research, summarizing materials, teaching forms and styles, providing exemplars, etc.,” said Alison Wilson, communications and community engagement for Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB), in an email.

“The tool is not without mistakes and sometimes generates incorrect information or has limitations in the resulting product of the chat request. Students or staff using the tool need to have a critical perspective when using the tool,” continued in the email.

The WCDSB recognizes ChatGPT can be misused and plagiarism can occur.

“New technologies may provide new opportunities in teaching, learning, and assessment and educators have the ability to structure assessments in a way that suits their purpose. We are currently reviewing this technology and will take time to consider its place in teaching and assessment practices before developing or amending any policies,” said Wilson.

The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is also reviewing the AI technology.

“UGDSB staff on the program team are currently looking into ChatGPT and are sharing information to help build awareness and understanding of this technology among classroom staff,” said Heather Loney, communications manager at UGDSB, in an email.

Staff use their professional judgment and the board's software vetting process when it comes to a tool like ChatGPT in their classrooms, said the email.

“Should trustees want a policy to be explored with regards to AI, they will undergo that process, and subsequently, staff would work on corresponding procedures,” said Loney.

“The development and evolution of AI technology is a huge change in how people will use technology. We are just at the beginning of what this type of tech may be capable of. All industries will see changes that result because of new technology and will have to evaluate how it will impact them.”
