Nothing like a good ol' Twitter battle to get the juices flowing.
City of Guelph councillors James Gordon and Dan Gibson are at it again, firing shots across cyber-space in a beef about the ongoing Nestle Water debate.
At last Monday's meeting of Guelph City Council a motion was unanimously passed deferring, but seemingly supporting, Gordon's efforts to get the city to voice its opposition to Nestle's bid to renew its water taking licence in Aberfoyle.
Gordon's motion was deferred, but only so the city could gather more information from the province in preparing its stance.
Everyone seemed happy, even though Gibson at one point pointed out that Gordon had not responded to his e-mail seeking further information.
Gordon responded that he had been busy with personal matters and that much of the information was available on the Internet.
At this point in time it appears Gibson was unaware of passionate remarks Gordon had made earlier that evening at a pre-council anti-Nestle rally outside city hall.
Once he was, he wrote on his blog, criticizing comments against a provincially regulated company that employs over 300 people.
"It’s one thing to relay our community’s concerns regarding the conservation of water and the current Permit to Take Water process, but it’s another thing entirely to create (as some have described) “hyper-rhetoric and division” around the issue. Division that (as Gordon suggests) could lead to hundreds of Guelph residents, neighbors and friends, losing their jobs," Gibson wrote on his blog
Then Friday's back and forth over Twitter.
Ward 1's Gibson got the ball rolling with a mid-morning tweet on Friday
Councilor James Gordon does not speak for me when it comes to water conservation & sustainable resource use. #Guelph https://t.co/j6ztkSuNjA

Ward 2's Gordon responded in kind.
@Ward1Guelph Councillor Gibson is correct. I don't speak for him.. I speak on behalf of the many Guelph citizens who have a legit concern

Then Gibson.
Council has one voice @thatjamesgordon & I believe endorsed motion (13-0) speaks to the greater consensus in #Guelph.

Stay tuned.
