A new webcam has been installed on the top of City Hall overlooking Guelph’s Market Square.

In a news release the city said camera provides a live, 24-hour feed of the square.

You can watch the feed at guelph.ca/marketsquare.

“The camera is an added feature that provides residents and visitors with a simple way to see what is happening in the square,” sais Rich Grau, manager of Sleeman Centre and Civic Precinct Facilities in the news release.

Grau says the idea of installing a webcam in a public space isn’t new. In fact, Guelph is following in the footsteps of cities such as Kingston, Timmins and Dieppe, New Brunswick.

He also notes the camera will not be used for security surveillance purposes and the images captured are not being recorded. The webcam is also far enough away from the square to ensure faces aren’t visible or identifiable.
