The City of Guelph is pleased to announce that Christopher Cooper will lead the organization’s Legal, Realty and Risk Services division as city solicitor/general manager Legal, Realty and Risk Services starting June 19.

“The city’s search for a new solicitor was an opportunity to find a candidate with the expertise and vision we need to lead our legal affairs,” said Derrick Thomson, the city’s chief administrative officer. “Christopher comes to Guelph with a wealth of municipal and private sector legal experience, as well as the leadership to guide and counsel our organization.”

Cooper comes to Guelph from the City of Brantford, where he held the position of city solicitor/director of Legal and Real Estate Services since 2013. Prior to Brantford, Cooper held a variety of legal positions in local government for municipalities such as St. Catharines, Aurora, Brampton, Caledon and York Region. He has also served as legal counsel and senior policy advisor to the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations.

Cooper holds a masters degree (specializing in Political Science) from the University of Alberta, and a Masters of Laws (LLM) (specializing in Administrative Law) from Osgoode Hall Law School.
