City picks 12 finalists for Main Street Mural Project (4 photos)

Three walls on Wilson Street and an inlet on City Hall's west side to have murals installed

The city had 202 submissions from artists all over the world looking to be one of four selected for the Main Street Mural Project.

Twelve of those submissions have been selected for stage 2 of the project, which will see large murals placed on public spaces in the Wilson Street area of Downtown Guelph.

The 12 (three for each location) now have the opportunity to develop a project proposal, budget and concept design and/or rendering for consideration, the city said on its web site.

Two of the locations are the cement walls on either side of Wilson Street underneath the bridge. One is on an old wooden fire hall door located on the west side of City Hall and the fourth is a side wall of the Guelph Farmers' Market.

The smallest location is 12.4 foot-by-5 foot and the largest is 72 foot-by-11 foot.

The winning artists will be paid $3,000, $5,0000, $30,000 and $34,000.

The three largest works will be done on aluminum panels and then installed a the location. The wooden door mural will be done on-site.

The 12 artists have until May 3 to submit their detailed bids and the winners will be chosen on May 24.

The installations are expected to be completed this September with an official unveiling on Sept. 27.
