Guelph City Council voted to donate $5,000 to the aid efforts for Fort McMurray at Monday night's meeting.
The city will also look into acquiring a Fort McMurray city flag to fly outside Guelph City Hall as a show of support.
"We are the most caring community in Canada and I think our citizens are stepping up," said councillor Cathy Downer, who brought the motion forward.
The donation will be made through the Red Cross relief fund.
There was some talk of asking citizens to match the donation, but it was quickly decided that many in Guelph are already donating so that wouldn't be necessary.
