City water tower gets major refurbish

Putting a new coat of painting on towering tower

Another City of Guelph water tower is getting a major facelift and refurbish.

Just as one on Clair Road in the south end did in recent years, the tower at Speedvale Avenue West and Imperial Road North is in the process of getting a new coat of paint and some interior work.

All Systems Inc. is doing the scaffolding, while Jacques Daoust Coatings Management Inc. (JDCMI) is doing the painting.

Nolan Henhawk, a blaster, painter and coordinator on the job site, said the scaffolding work took about five weeks to complete. The prep work for the exterior painting work is expected to start next week, and take three to four weeks to complete.

Henhawk, a Mohawk for the Six Nations of the Grand River - about one hour from Guelph -  said he hasn't been this close to home for a long time. He has been all over the world on JDCMI's large-scale painting jobs, he said.

"It doesn't bother me being up there," he said, looking up at the top of the towering tower. "I'm not scared of heights."

The tower will stay in active service until about the end of the month, he said, and then will be taken out of service as the work proceeds. There will be painting on the lining of the tower as well.
